Taking Action

Climate change is one of the world’s most challenging issues. Human emissions of greenhouse gasses have increased global temperatures by over 1% since pre industrial times and this rise is continuing to grow at an alarming rate.

Organisations need to act now if the trend is to be halted and reversed. For individuals it is easier to take action as we each can make changes that directly impact our carbon footprint, for large complex organisations it’s much more challenging, not least because the majority of the carbon consumed in in the supply chain.

CO2A has developed an innovative and accurate software tool for measuring large organisational carbon footprints including the critical supply chain element. Hosted securely in Google data centres we have the capability to run massive data sets quickly and accurately, giving customers detailed carbon footprint results within days.

For around 12,000 of the UK’s largest organisations there is now a legal requirement to report energy use and carbon emissions under Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting (SECR).

Large private sector organisations are affected and many will be reporting for the first time in 2020. Where two or more of the following criteria apply to a company within a financial year:

  • More than 250 employees.
  • Annual turnover greater than £36m.
  • Annual balance sheet total greater than £18m.

Public sectors and organisations consuming less than 40,000kw are exempt. There is no exemption for involvement for energy used in other schemes - e.g. Climate Change Agreements (CCAs) or EU Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS). In total, it's estimated that 12,000 organisations are impacted by SECR.
